Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located at Cangfanggou of Wulumuqi City, Xinjiang. It was named by compilation group of regional stratigraphic table of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1977, and published formally in 1981. In 1977, the Regional Stratigraphic Table Compilation Group of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region established the Shangcangfanggou Group, with a lower Jiucaiyuan Fm and upper Shaofanggou Fm, belonging to the Early Triassic.
Synonym: It was named as Cangfanggou Red Beds representing Triassic, and then renamed as Cangfanggou System by Hu Houwen. In 1955, the Northwest Petroleum Complex Team changed its age to Early-Middle Triassic. In 1959, Pan Zhongxiang changed the Cangfanggou System to Cangfanggou Series, and regarded the underlying Quanzijie and Wutonggou Beds as the Upper Permian, and the overlying Jiucaiyuan and Shafanggou (Shaofanggou) Beds as the Lower and Middle Triassic. In 1960, Yang Shizhong changed these beds to formations.
Lithology and Thickness
Lower Jiucaiyuan Fm is mainly sandstone and mudstone and overlying Shaofanggou Fm is mainly sandstone and siltstone. Detailed description of lithology can be found in each formation
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The bottom of the sandstone is conformable contact with the underlying Guodikeng Fm siltstone of Late Permian.
Upper contact
It is conformable in contact to the overlying Karamay Fm (Kelamayi Fm)
Regional extent
Distributed near Urumqi, reaching Jimusar in the east and Turpan Basin in the southeast.
